Signs of Teen Drug and Alcohol Addiction : Living Green Magazine: " . . . Behavioral Signs - Changes in behavior can often be a result of drug or alcohol use. A teen who is doing drugs or alcohol will likely have mood changes or emotional instability. They might be hostile, easily aggravated, or uncooperative for no apparent reason. They may also avoid interaction with family members or friends, or on the other hand, never seem to be home at all. Also look out for extreme exhaustion, as certain substances can cause them to lose hours of rest. None of these alone is a cause for concern, but you should always take note of anything strange. Physical Symptoms - Teens are often characterized by being overly concerned with physical appearance. Teens generally want to look a very specific way, especially when their friends are around. If this describes your child, but all of a sudden disappears, then it might be a cause for alarm. Aside from a messy and careless appearance, physical signs of drug and alcohol addiction include red, flushed cheeks/face, burns or soot on hands or lips, dilated pupils, excessive sweating and of course, track marks on appendages. Personal Habits - While he/she may not notice it, you might be able to catch specific personal habits that could clue you in on nefarious activity. Look out for avoiding eye contact, clenching teeth, locking his/her bedroom doors, secretly texting or calling on the phone, voracious appetite, cash flow issues, and regularly breaking curfew. . . . Amy Winehouse Died of Alcohol Poisoning
Second Inquest Confirms Amy Winehouse Died of Alcohol Poisoning ". . . . Ms. Radcliffe said Ms. Winehouse “died of alcohol toxicity” and recorded a verdict of death by misadventure. She said the singer “voluntarily consumed alcohol — a deliberate act that took an unexpected turn and led to her death.” Ms. Winehouse was a critically acclaimed singer who won multiple Grammy Awards for her 2006 retro-soul album “Back to Black.” She was found dead in her London home on July 23, 2011, with empty vodka bottles scattered around her body. She had long suffered from alcoholism and drug addiction. The coroner said Ms. Winehouse’s blood had five times the legal limit for alcohol for driving in Britain, a lethal level of 0.4 percent. A pathologist testified during the 45-minute hearing at St. Pancras Coroner’s Court that such a high concentration would cause respiratory arrest. Christina Romete, a doctor who had treated Ms. Winehouse for addiction, said she had given up illegal drugs like heroin, crack cocaine and marijuana, but had struggled to stop drinking. Dr. Romete said Ms. Winehouse had begun drinking a few days before her death after two weeks of avoiding alcohol. “She said she started drinking again because she felt bored,” Dr. Romete said."

Puerto Rico Drug Addiction Turns Users Into Zombies
Zombie Island: Puerto Rico Drug Addiction Turning Resident Users Into Zombies (VIDEO): ". . . . Puerto Rico has been described as “the new front door of the war on drugs”, or “the backdoor to America.”
The island's strategic localization, its multiple rich ports, in addition to its commonwealth political status and relationship to the United States, serve drug cartels from South America and the Caribbean, as the perfect trampoline to the mainland.
But the drug doesn’t just travel out of the island; it also stays inside affecting residents every year. Thousands of people wake up everyday to the reality of having to maintain an addiction, to some of the most dangerous substances.
One of the island’s most common drugs, mainly for being cheaper than others and producing a strong high effect, is Xylazine, better known as horse tranquilizer. . . ."

Northland faces an epidemic in opiate drug addiction | Duluth News Tribune | Duluth, Minnesota: "“You wake up every day and you need something,” Pirkola said. “And you call around: Usually somebody knows somebody who has pills they’ll sell, or there are people that will get a good deal from somebody and gather them up, and they’ll go sell them. “I had unlimited pills,” he said. One of the reasons it was so easy to get the drugs: More opioid painkillers are being distributed in the Northland and in Minnesota than ever before, a joint News Tribune and St. Paul Pioneer Press investigation has found. Narcotic prescriptions used to combat pain nearly doubled from 2005 to 2011, when there was enough oxycodone and hydrocodone distributed in Minnesota to provide 18 pills for every man, woman and child. That’s up from two pills per person in 1997. Though Minnesota ranks low overall compared to the rest of the country in opiate use, its impact on the state has been no less devastating. . . ."

John McAfee's Last Stand
John McAfee's Last Stand | Threat Level | Wired.com: " . . . From then on he felt like he was always one step away from a total breakdown, which finally came at Omex in 1983. He was snorting lines of coke off his desk most mornings, polishing off a bottle of scotch every day, and living in constant fear that he would run out of drugs. His wife had left him, he’d given away his dog, and in the wake of what he calls a mutual agreement, he left Omex. He ended up shuttered in his house, with no friends, doing drugs alone for days on end and wondering whether he should kill himself just as his father had. “My life was total hell,” he says.
Finally he went to a therapist, who suggested he go to Alcoholics Anonymous. He attended a meeting and started sobbing. Someone gave him a hug and told him he wasn’t alone.
“That’s when life really began for me,” he says.
He says he’s been sober ever since. . . ."

Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy - Alcohol, Marijuana, Cocaine, Methamphetamine, Nicotine
Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (Alcohol, Marijuana, Cocaine, Methamphetamine, Nicotine) | National Institute on Drug Abuse: "Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) was developed as a method to prevent relapse when treating problem drinking, and later it was adapted for cocaine-addicted individuals. Cognitive-behavioral strategies are based on the theory that in the development of maladaptive behavioral patterns like substance abuse, learning processes play a critical role. Individuals in CBT learn to identify and correct problematic behaviors by applying a range of different skills that can be used to stop drug abuse and to address a range of other problems that often co-occur with it. A central element of CBT is anticipating likely problems and enhancing patients’ self-control by helping them develop effective coping strategies. Specific techniques include exploring the positive and negative consequences of continued drug use, self-monitoring to recognize cravings early and identify situations that might put one at risk for use, and developing strategies for coping with cravings and avoiding those high-risk situations."
